Kuru ia a form of transmissible spongiform encephopathy, a neurological disease, named for the Papua New Guinea Fore tribe word "to shake", because of the trembling and bursts of laughter from those infected. It is suspected to be spread by cannibalism of an infected human and was last observed in an outbreak in the late 1950's.
