I love the comment by 'freedom4all' that tries to say the VPC may have pulled their numbers out of their ass but they can still prove they are right by pulling MORE numbers out of their ass.

  2. VPC doesn't say how many CCW holders there were, compared to the 107 who killed someone, and they also didn't say how many of those deaths were actual murders, as opposed to justifiable homicides.

  3. According to Philip Van Cleave, President of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, there are approximately six million concealed carry permit holders nationwide. If this number is accurate, and also assuming that the VPC's number of 107 murders is accurate (just go with that for now), then we have a murder rate by CCW holders of 0.0017833333%. So we have 17 thousandths of one percent of permit holders who have "done a bad thing".

Per the FBI, there were 14,180 murders in 2008 (source: http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/offenses/expanded_information/homicide.html)

In 2008, the estimated US population was 304,374,846 (source: http://www.census.gov/popest/national/files/NST_EST2009_ALLDATA.csv).

The national "homicide percentage" then, is 0.00465873%. Comparing the two numbers, we find that the "CHP homicide rate" is 38.2793% (Say 38.3% for grins) of that of the overall rate for the US as a whole.

And, as was pointed out to me, of the total population count of 304+million, some large number of those citizens are children, elderly, disabled, in prison, etc., and thus are unlikely to have access to much less utilize firearms. If we back out, say 25 million, we come up with 279,374,846 persons who might wield a firearm, giving us a "murder percentage" of 0.0050756180%. The percentage of CCW holders is then 35% that of the general population.

IOW, CCW holders are at least three times less likely to commit murder than the general population BASED ON THE VPC'S OWN NUMBERS.
