policymakers remain unwilling to take any meaningful action to address this urgent public safety issue,
I must agree, but not in the way they understand it. The "policymakers" remain unwilling to get rid of all the "gun control" insanity that keeps people from being able to defend themselves.
Criminals - violent criminals - are the urgent public safety issue, not the rest of us.

Merger Will Better Coordinate and Leverage Resources to Waste Taxpayer Money Accusing Inanimate Objects of Crimes
Two anti-self-defense and liberty prevention organizations, The Honest Tyrants Alliance and Truthful Tyrants United to Prevent Life and Liberty, are joining forces to encourage further tyranny of the populace and also to tell the truth for a freakin' change. The combined organizations promise not to submarine their evil, authoritarian agenda in a tub of misleading code phrases, (that nobody really understood anyway.)
The merger will maximize resources to better coordinate the devastation of the lives of innocent people who attempt to employ in their defense weapons invented in the stone age or later. Each year, thousands of people somehow escape the long reach of the authoritarian state, and miss out on the unique experience of being harassed or destroyed by agents of the state who enforce illegal disarmament diktats by employing disproportionate violence.
"Despite our ongoing efforts to promote the harassment and imprisonment of people who have committed no crime against others, policymakers remain unwilling to outright stomp the necks of anyone who even tries to acquire a weapon for his own defense," said Alan Smithee, executive director of the nonexistent Honest and Truthful Tyrants United for the Prevention of Life and Liberty. "We believe aligning our efforts will increase the rate at which this country becomes a statist, authoritarian nightmare, where people are equally afraid of being savaged by violent criminals or agents of government. This in turn will provide greater opportunities to completely rob people of their freedom, which is the ultimate goal; we're just waiting for them to be disarmed."
For example, the HTTUPLL recently launched a 450 mile tour in Wisconsin with a display of shirts, each representing a citizen who had died because he was unable to legally defend himself even with a flint axe a caveman would have no trouble carrying, while government agents with jobs as minor as guarding junk mail or examining excise tax forms are equipped with machineguns, free ammunition, and immunity from responsibility should those weapons go missing.
"We are coming together in a more coordinated way to leverage, uh, corporate buzzwords....aw hell, we just want to socially engineer society into our own demented, paranoia-fueled tragedy, because we are incapable of learning from our history of failure, and that it is our birthright to destroy the lives of complete strangers under pretexts we've concocted from our own profound ignorance."

You're right MamaL, but what you didn't mention is that very often the police and the violent criminals are one and the same.
