UPDATE: Well, right in the middle of the webcast the dang Babbage difference engine decided it would be a fine time to crash. It may be time to trade my old coal-burning steamer in for one of those new-fangled pull-start models.

  1. you can build a desktop pc on the cheap these days just by picking out compatible stuff on newegg. i think they can do assembly for you.

  2. Why did it crash?

  3. No idea--I'm going to do a test with Skype and see how much RAM it's eating up--every once in a while I need to end the process on Firefox because it just keeps eating it up and slows everything down to the point of stalling, so I suspect something similar may have happened--and yes, I do have everything else turned off when I do these video sessions.

Any ideas, please weigh in--but with sympathy for someone who is very, very unschooled in all things technical.

And, of course, who knows--it could also have been a freak power surge or something totally unrelated--I've only seen it crash like this once or twice before in the two years I've had it, and I did upgrade the RAM. It's an emachine, AMD 64, 223 GB and uses Vista. And for those inclined to say "There's your problem right there," for the time being, I've gotta work with what I've got.

  4. So no error message or even a blue screen of death?

  5. It went to a text screen telling me there had been a crash--I don't recall the exact words, I was too busy trying to scramble and get things back online. Next time, if it happens, I'll pause to record the exact screen text.
