That is because conservative and liberal mean exactly the opposite in America than they do everywhere else in the world.
Conservatives in the rest of the world support the state and thereby conserve its power. Liberals in the rest of the world are for less state power and thereby increase personal liberty, except in England where lack of testicular fortitude means they both worship the state.
In America, conservatives are those who favor a conservative reading of the Constitution (one in which the words mean they say, with the meaning the words had at the time of its writing), which by its nature limits state power, thereby increasing personal liberty.
Liberals in America are those who favor a liberal interpretation of the constitution where the terms can be redefined and meanings found where none were written, thereby increasing state power and limiting personal liberty.
American conservatives= personal liberty by adhering to the constitution.
Rest of the world conservatives= conserving and increasing state power.
The inverse for liberalism.
The reason for this is simple. America is the only nation on earth where the power resides in the people, everywhere else the power resides in the state. Conservatives of both agendas believe in protecting the source of power. The difference comes because the source of power is different and only the free experience our system of power residing in the people.
I can break it down even more simple, but this should be easy enough for anyone to understand.
I like straightarrow's analysis, but having lived in Oz all my life, I would describe the two main political parties in Oz as "outright socialist" and "only slightly less socialist".
I leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine which is which.
Here's a little science for you, David. Something as small-scale as a drain, or even a dust devil depend on local effects. For instance, I have figured out how to create whirlpools with my hands in my swimming pool, and I can spin them in either direction at will. Tornadoes are affected indirectly by the Coriolis Force, because their parent cyclones are directly affected by said force. By the time you get to hurricanes, typhoons Indian cyclones, and extratropical cyclones (the type of storms in the U.S.) THEN you have storms big enough for their spin direction to be affected by the Earth's rotation (Coriolis Force).
Not to confuse anyone, but the Liberals in Australia, like in Denmark, are actually right-wing.
ReplyDeleteMust be that equator thingy--winter is summer and drains circle the other way...:)
