He didn't see the people stranded in New Orleans that Friday as enemies who needed to be neutralized but as Americans who needed rescue. Honore did not come in firing. Not only that, he thought it important to avoid the appearance that waging war was his desire. His soldiers have their trigger fingers ready, but video footage shows Honore ordering them to lower their guns and cussing at those slow to obey. They were there to save people, not shoot them. [More]OK, fine, but the question in my mind is, what would he have ordered had those people been armed for self-protection?
Who would he have restrained at the bridge, and how?

Five years later, and justice is still waiting for Riley, Nagin and Compass. And waiting.
ReplyDeleteNever again.
And what assurance do any of us have that our cities won't do the same. And how will we know, in the midst of communication failures and disaster, that this isn't the Big One nationwide?
So, never again. Anywhere.
My granddaughter, desperate for a job, is going into the military. I told her I'd be interested to hear what they tell her about the duty and right to disobey illegal orders.
Now, she hasn't had any doctrine training yet, but her flip, instinctive response was "Follow them anyway. Obeying orders is MY JOB."
God help us all. And if she ever leads a detail to oppress Americans, God help her. I will consider her as having chosen sides and act accordingly.
These officers were on duty to keep the peace, within our chaotic boundaries. Looting, burgularies, fires set by the civilians were not unheard of. This city and surrounding areas were under martial law.. People better get knowledged about this event. People loose every right they have known.. 2 signatures will leave us, the people powerless..including guns being taken away.. But, this law was needed to control people from looting my home, all my neighbors homes over here on the "westbank".
ReplyDeleteMartial law comes with a stiff price. I wonder what situation would have occured if it was a group of national guardsman manning the bridge at that time instead of our officers? Instead of placeing our officers out on the street next time, Send in the Marines..! Katrina's effects have lasted way too long..lol onward to the next devestating hurricane...
