NYPD and the police in most other big cities really make this one EASY to believe by their own actions and attitudes. I forget where some demonstrators were protesting jail conditions or something and one was videotaping, on the sidewalk across the streat at high noon. The cop greeted him with "I'm not going to arrest you THIS time..."

Oh dear - couldn't the officer in this sordid affair be prosecuted under illegal wiretapping statutes? Or is it OK only if you're a police officer?
