“Open Carry Still Dangerous — Even Where ‘Legal’" is my “Rights Watch” column for the February 2011 issue of GUNS Magazine. [More]
Today's Gun Rights Examiner column looks at how those who are breaking no laws are endangered by those in "law enforcement" who are.

Resolve to brave official disapproval and openly carry the link to your friends?
How come we don't see this kind of harassment of open-carry in the 'hood?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, thugs don't. They conceal without permission right up until the second they blast someone, then they conceal again as they run.
By definition, it's a lot safer to lean on people who are obeying the law as they assert their rights and to whom the idea of INITIATING violence is unthinkable.
These cowardly bullies have blown away people for reaching to pull up their falling pants, toothbrush in hand, as they interrogate them after interrupting them getting dressed for work.
It's like they're LOOKING for an excuse.
Don't peon me and tell me it's rain.
I have open carried throughout the Fort Collins/Loveland/Greeley area. Never had any issues. I have had the occasional odd look if I am alone. However I have noticed that when I am with my infant son and wife (who has her CC permit), my firearm is rarely noticed. I have been asked on occasion if I was a cop or why I was carrying. I try to respond this way. "I am just a law abiding citizen who feels it is my right and responsibility to protect my family and friends. One just never knows when it will be needed." I have never been stopped by police yet. I am considering getting my concealed carry permit just because of situations like this and it would be nice to have the option.
ReplyDeleteI have purchased guns from many cops and I often ask them how they deal with open carriers.
ReplyDeleteMost of them - particularly younger ones tell me shamelessly that they like to prone out open carriers - most will give you a platitude or two about "man with a gun" calls and having to access the situation on the fly but a few have admitted to just liking to push open carriers as a power trip and to show them up as impotant pussies.
I am sure that IN ALL CASES the underlying motive is the later.
I often ask why they would want to turn potential law abiding allies into persons that would NEVER come to their aid and it comes down to the blue line club.
This is the ultimate basis of ALL the "only ones" stories - the police view themselves above the public they serve / work for.
Face it - most police are becomming taxing authorities anyway - fighting crime is dangerouse and you always hear that they want to go home at the end of the day - Much easier to get home after a day of proning out open carriers with empty guns and people that double park than to chase "real" criminal violators
that will run or shoot or spit at you.
Better to harass people that will bend over for you willingly in fear and then appologize.

For those in the San Bernardino County High Desert area, I was told by a deputy with rank that the word from the top is that "They like it", but "you will probably be checked to make sure you are legal".
ReplyDeleteSo have at it.
