"The Second Amendment is My Gun Permit"

No it's not.

I just saw that stupid quote again in an email solicitation and was reminded about how much it bugs me when people say it, because those who haven't thought things through believe it and then use it themselves.

  1. "The Second Amendment is My Gun Permit."

Phrased differently, the writer asserts: "The Second Amendment PERMITS me to possess and carry a gun."

Permission can be withdrawn. A natural right cannot, absent the use of force.

A "permit" is applied for - e.g., a building permit, driving permit, etc. A permit allows one to apply for "permission to perform an act.

After all this time, you'd think that folks could get this right.

  2. If you don't need a permit to exercise rights protected by the 1st amendment, you don't need one for those rights protected by the 2d, or any other amendment for that matter.
