We're the Only Ones Contradicting Ourselves Enough

Everybody I've seen posting on this has focused on the valuable Sturmgewehr 44, and some have complimented the police for not just being robots about it and going the extra mile to assist the woman.

Yeah, well, like the song says, every silver lining's got a touch of grey.

I think the real story is the contradiction the police spokesmen present, but do not seem to recognize the implications of.  First consider:
Crabtree attributes gun accidents to ignorance and carelessness. The anonymous gun buy-back program is aimed at preventing people from running into potentially dangerous situations with a gun they don't know how to use or work.
And then:
"She did not know it was a machine gun.

"If the gun had been in the closet loaded, any second you could hit the wrong level and discharge a fatal round," he said of the Sturmgewehr 44.
This is a point I've been trying to make for some time. What the hell kind of "public safety" is enhanced by giving people who know nothing about proper gun handling financial incentives to do just that, and to further take them out of their homes and transport them in public?

And yeah, I suspect "level" is not so much a typo as an "Authorized Journalist" who doesn't know any better.
