It Takes a Global Village

We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children.
 
So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities. [More]

    I really don't have a problem with the idea that everyone in the community has a shared responsibility to care for its children.

    What I have a problem with is the implicit assumption that the State is the sole, or even the primary, expression of the community.

    It's not.

    Communities are voluntary. The State is not.
