I remember my Dad telling me that when he was a boy, his class was visited by some Civil War veterans. Some of them, in turn, would have been born while some of these men were still alive.
It kind of puts in perspective how brief the experiment has been and how quickly things have changed.

Reminds me of how amazed I was to find out recently that there are still at least two living children of Civil War veterans.
