By the way, one does not really need 32 megajoules to perform effective point-defense against armed thugs in body armor. A far smaller version can turn them into a short stack with one shot. Until you connect the power to the rail, there is little risk of accidental firing, unlike a homemade Claymore device. Parts for something like this are not as interest-producing as pressure cookers or mountain howitzer barrel castings. Just something to consider as we harken to the "NO FORT SUMTERS!!!" crowd if you want to be able to do something other than surrender or die in a hail of incoming bullets when your local "finest" decide to do their thing...
Well gravity is indeed, Ned, more dangerous that this cool nerd tool if your elevation is sufficient. Of course, if you don't require the portability designed into the device, one can make it FAR more effective than gravity. It's all about energy storage per unit weight or volume. Hogdon H322 stores FAR more energy per unit volume or weight than the best capacitors available today. So if you gotta pack and you want the most bang you can carry, go with powder. On the other hand, if space and weight ain't an issue and you don't have to move it, one can put a huge chunk of metal, or many small chunks, on target with this thing' big brother. It all depends on your application.
Now if they can just make it stronger than a bb gun.
ReplyDeleteIs 32 megajoules strong enough for you, Cargosquid:

ReplyDeleteWhen in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout...
ReplyDeleteOMG. PLEASE STOP THE CARNAGE! This device can penetrate a laptop housing!!!
Cripes. Wondering how many folks have damaged their laptop housing by dropping it.
I bet gravity is more dangerous than this cool nerd tool.
