“Now, over the next couple of months, we’ve got a couple of issues: gun control,” the official White House transcript of his remarks records, noting the mention elicited applause. “I just came from Denver, where the issue of gun violence is something that has haunted families for way too long, and it is possible for us to create common-sense gun safety measures that respect the traditions of gun ownership in this country and hunters and sportsmen, but also make sure that we don’t have another 20 children in a classroom gunned down by a semiautomatic weapon -- by a fully automatic weapon in that case, sadly.” [More]This evening's Gun Rights Examiner report notes that trust must be earned, so it figures the entitled expect it to be bestowed.

Obama complains about mistrust on ‘gun control’ while spreading falsehoods
We're the Only Ones Observant Enough
Parker said the family does not understand how both troopers failed to see Watkins in the car, even though the front seat airbags were deployed. They wonder whether she may have still been alive at that point. [More]Then again, had she groaned and moved, they may have spooked and shot her...

The Second Amendment as an Expression of First Principles
I got my March 2013 copy of Imprimis in the mail the other day and confess I have not had time to do more than glance at it, but it sure looks like an important essay.
Fortunately, for sharing purposes, they also have it posted online.
Temperatures are starting to warm up a bit and I'll be doing the first weed and feed of the season this weekend. Maybe after that I'll pull a chair out to the firepit, light a 'gar and do me some reading.

They provide the necessary counterweight to keep NRA from moving too far to the left. Anyone who puts GOA down would have you believe "The Winning Team" represents how far the envelope can and should be pushed. [Read]

I am a gun owner and avid hunter. Whether for protection, recreation, competition, or to ensure our freedoms granted by the Founders, I continue to support "the right of the people to keep and bear arms..." [More]Ahhh...yeah. About that...
Keep working on him, guys. No doubt he's the best of the two, but correcting that kind of fundamental misunderstanding needs to be impressed on him in no uncertain terms, and he needs to let us know he gets it.

I blogged about this last year but didn't carry it forward any further due to not getting a response to what I thought was a perfectly reasonable inquiry.
James Simpson has now given us some researched details, along with further examples of police militarization abuses.
The only other thing I could find was a tangentially-related FDA product recall notice, and was wondering if that warranted introducing potential lead contamination into the mix...

'Universal background check' opponents get unexpected boost from ACLU
These are powerful arguments that can be used as counters to those who would scoff if the source were simply the NRA. And as for the hollow protest that current law prevents the establishment of a database, does anyone doubt the same people who are pushing for background checks, and who would push for total citizen disarmament if they thought they could, wouldn’t end such a prohibition in a heartbeat if they could get the votes? [More]Today's Gun Rights Examiner report notes we've just been handed a gift. Use it.
Not Alone
Pavlich is not the only commentator to assert that Fast and Furious was an attempt to curb the Second Amendment. NRA executive vice-president Wayne LaPierre said in 2011 that “Fast and Furious” was a “plot to undermine” the right to bear arms. [More]You don't say.
With Spokesmen Like These...
"For example, right now if you go to a gun show, you have registered firearm dealers who are there, but if you have a casual sale ... they're not a registered dealer, perhaps they can make a sale" and conduct a background check because "you've got accessible, they're right there in the same venue, so you can have those background checks done very easily without being a burden." [More]So, Asa --who's going to pay for it, and how is that not a burden? Seeing as how we're talking about a right, how would that not be analogous to, say, a poll tax? And what happens if someone refuses to go along with your demand -- what kind of "burdens" will they be exposed to then?
And then there's this, from NRA "clarifying" their School Shield czar's position with all the skill of Juliet Johnson:
"He meant expanding it to include more people into the national instant check system," the spokesman said. "And by number of people, this is in reference to the quality of information within NICS."You know: Blanket dragnets!
No? I guess it depends on what the meaning of the word "adjudicated" is:
“This is a good bill. It is essential to being able to follow the law to keep people with mental illnesses from purchasing firearms.”, says Marion Hammer, National Rifle Association/Unified Sportsmen of Florida.Funny. I'm still not seeing what needs to be said in no uncertain terms:
Under the legislation, anyone voluntarily checking themselves in for mental health treatment would have to sign a form. The form acknowledges they had been ordered to seek help and if they do not go voluntarily, they would be committed. When they sign the form they also give up their right to gun ownership.

This Day in History: April 4
This will be handed to you by Capt. Conyers, who will inform you what we have contemplated. He is sent forward to collect provisions for the subsistence of the army, and I beg you will assist him in this necessary business. The army will march tomorrow, and I hope you will be prepared to support its operations with a considerable force; Gen. Sumter is written to, and I doubt not will be prepared to cooperate with us. The captain can give you a full history of Lord Cornwallis’ manoeuvers in this state, and of the several skirmishes as well as the battle of Guilford, which finally terminated in a retreat of the enemy, and his lordship was obliged in turn to run hastily.
