I've been pretty consistent on where I stand on this.
If "felons" are truly dangerous, releasing them makes as much sense as saying the man-eating lion's sentence is up and it's time to open the cage. I got that concept from this book-- great history if you can find it.

The Kukla book is a real gem… one of the last remaining sources that hasn’t been resigned to the “memory hole” that documents Charlton Heston as having been a useful idiot in the push FOR gun control back in 1968 (along with fellow actors Gregory Peck, Hugh O'Brian, James Stewart and Kirk Douglas).
