It's a form of the "Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect". Reporters ALWAYS assume any public shooter is a so-called "right-wing extremist". They are always proven wrong, but that never stops them from assuming it again -- or even questioning whether it's a reasonable assumption anymore -- the next time there's a mass shooting incident.
What it DOES show, on the other hand, is that mainstream reporters are smoking what they're selling; the Gell-Mann Effect applies even to their own writing. (Also, something about the definition of insanity.)
