No surprise there. It's "the art of the deal": go in demanding everything, knowing you'll be walked back to something more reasonable.
The surprise is that so many have so much trouble understanding that ALL of Trump's "hard-line" points are negotiable; that he's only going to hold the hard-line until the negotiating -- the "dealing" -- begins; that he doesn't concretely believe in or stand for anything, other than his own inflated ego.
