I always preferred the big aluminum clipboard approach. Got into an Air Force Base Command Post that way once (lest anyone panic, I was supposed to be there, but seeing the clipboard, no one bothered to check ID or other credentials).
I can affirm this. I fix printers and copiers, and with my tool bag, a name badge (from my company, not the hospital/factory/base) i can pretty much go anywhere that isn't locked. and if it is...someone will let me in usually. makes it handy to get my job done, but is a bit worrying as well.
