Seems a Little Light

For every 1,000 residents in Mississippi, there are 6.8 guns. That's 20,389 registered firearms dispersed among 2,991,207 people. [More]
Really?

And "registered"?

And this was a product of collaboration betweeen media giants with global resources? What else does CBS and AFP tell us about guns we might want to double-check?

  1. I think these moronic "journalists" are looking at NFA registrations. Shush! Don't tell them that few gun owners have even one NFA item. The real numbers on guns owned are much, much higher.

  2. They did go by the NFA Registered Firearms list.
There is NO WAY to know how many guns are in ANY State, except MAYBE in the few that require ALL guns to be registered, and getting that information from the State may not be possible.
BTW, as of the 2017 list, there is a total of 5,203,489 NFA Registered items of all types.
AOW, DD, MG, Silencer, SBR and SBS.
California (???) has the most NFA items (344,622), Destructive Device being the most at 272,128.
And WHY does Connecticut have 52,965 Machine Guns?
Almost all in the hands of Law Enforcement.

  3. Yep, if memory serves, their study even mentions that and states that "ordinary" weapons are far more numerous and uncountable.

  4. so for Ohio...
For every 1,000 residents in Ohio, there are 11.4 guns. That's 131,990 registered firearms among 11,570,808 people.

But the Ohio Concealed carry stats for 2016 show there are now 574,000 active permits in Ohio

The first page of that study does list the methodology as accessing the NFA as the only legally accessible list.

Their other list shows Ohio at 19.6% gun ownership rate
    https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/gun-ownership-rates-by-state/7/
which comes out to 2,267,878 estimated Gun owners in Ohio.
