After reading the article, it’s clear to me that the difference was in the professionalism and espertise of the people who taught him in Communist China vs. those in the USA. Reading the “advice” given him by his US professors reminded me of nothing as much as the “advice” Hank Rearden continually receives from his mooching younger brother in Atlas Shrugged.
