Not too long ago a story ran in the Miami Herald about a new class at the local police academy. On the first day, uniformed officers came in and took away several of the new recruits after arresting them for outstanding warrants.
Tucker Carlson admirably detailed how adding a “residency requirement” for police officers turned DC’s police force from one with a reputation for being one of the best in the country into one riddled with illiterate, borderline-retarded, gangster-mole, and just plain evil cops, who got jobs despite records that would have immediately failed a simple BC… if the department had bothered to run one before giving people a badge, a gun, and the authority of The State. In fact, the department explicitly counseled applicants with records to persevere in the application process.
The article is entitled “Washington’s Inept Police Force,” ran in the WSJ on 1993-11-03, and apparently the entire interwebz has been assiduously sanitized of its presence… but you can still get it if you know someone. It’s required reading for anybody who still thinks that government “works.”

ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you! I never realized that Duck Duck Go was that significantly inferior to (shudder) Google.
