No they did not.

They know full well what they're doing.

    "[Y]ou can’t rewrite history to comport with your political positions."

    YES . . . YOU . . . CAN! The left does it all the time. As Lenin put it, "A lie told often enough becomes the truth."

    Some applicable truths from George Orwell's (a socialist) "1984":
    "He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past."
    "Reality exists in the human mind and nowhere else."
    "How do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable – what then?"
    "The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth."
    "Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them." - The left is exceedingly proficient at this.

    Finally, Orwell as applied to the left: "The [Democratic] Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. [they] are not interested in the good of others; [they] are interested solely in power – pure power." Note: I suspect that this is equally true of mainline Republicans as well. It probably would apply - sooner or later - to ANY political party. {sigh}
