By the time you get to the US Supreme Court, you're supposed to know the difference between the "privileges and immunities" of a 14th amendment citizen and the Rights of a man. Besides, the state holds the title to the car, not the "defendant". If he wants to be the owner, then he can get the manufacturer's certificate of origin from Land Rover simply by requesting it from them. Then he can de-register it and the state can't take it away from him. Not lawfully, anyway. -MM
