The Appalachian Trail runs from Springer Mountain, Georgia through North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, terminating on Mount Katadin, Maine. Aside from the Constitutional Carry states of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, government issued permits/licenses are required to possess and carry a firearm in the other states.
If Constitutional Carry was practiced in all the states, it is doubtful that many AT hikers would arm themselves with firearms. It has been observed that initial sections of the trail are dotted with discarded equipment that was considered too heavy and unnecessary. I have observed that some hikers would not carry a common pocketknife with a 4” blade as it was too heavy, instead using a lighter knife with a 2” blade. Encountering another hiker carrying a 20" blade would be a warning that rationality was not in play.
