That seems a bit more than a "birthday surprise" gone wrong. And didn't Bergan know Dennis was a gun owner?

And not to play Monday morning quarterback, but it probably wouldn't hurt to pre-think the scenario of what to do if an unknown person is banging outside, and make the civil and/or criminal charges-anticipating default that unless someone outside may need protecting, to hunker down inside in case the door or window is breached and call it in.
