'My Wife Won't Allow a Gun in the House'

I actually heard someone say that one time and asked: "What is she prepared to do if someone brings one in anyway?"

I bring that up because a frequent correspondent emailed me a story about one of his friends whose wife won't let him get a gun in this time of panic buying. He thought he'd had her talked into it, but she balked outside the gun store, partially because "of the people waiting in the parking lot - some douche bags showing off their big, bad dogs. Morons."

I share this for two reasons:

One is to point out how anyone who lets that scare them off and paralyze them into inaction would probably be worse than useless in a DGU situation. Until both these people work on their ability to process reality and personal responsibility, just adding hardware is unlikely to solve their vulnerability issues.

Two is because "our side" needs to recognize that hoplophobia is very real for some, and behavior that intimidates nervous newcomers like this woman is even less helpful than the stereotypical bloviating gun store clerk with an obnoxious, know-it-all attitude.

In fairness, who knows if the dog owners really were morons? The account I read had the wife scared and swayed by practically everything and the husband feeding her neuroses. I could say I'd have escorted my wife into the store, but I wouldn't have had to: I made sure mine was receptive on our third date when I took her to the range, well before any commitments had been made.

  1. If he HAD actually gone in and bought a gun and there was a crisis he would have to ask her if it'd OK to load it, and by then it's all over but the shouting.
Some people really are better off without a gun, and this is one of them.

  2. It sounds like the husband did not do a good enough job explaining the pros/cons of having the firearm in the first place. But you are right in a DGU situation he would be useless as he's going to catch hell from her anytime he wants to go train or practice with the firearm he buys.

  3. It sounds to me as though the wife wears the pants in the family, which women deep down secretly hate. The ones who boss around their husbands do not like it one bit, no matter what they say in public, and it comes across with bitter resentment toward the husband. They are never happy for that reason, and it only becomes worse over time.

  4. In my home, the guns were there before the wife. She knew what she was getting into....sort of. Because upon my assuming of room temperature, she will be in for a BIG surprise when the safes are finally opened.

  6. She lives in la-la land and he facilitates it. No reason to expect a change in behavior that has been reinforced for many years. He's just as responsible for it as she is, they are living in the false world they have created.

The fix? A little too late but he should get a set and make the decisions he is responsible for, or send her packing. I doubt either one will happen.

  7. Get rid of her or else man up and go buy a gun without her "permission."

  8. My wife was the same way, but she has been educated and now is a decent shot. All weapons are secure except for the one I keep by the bed.

  9. When we got married my wife of 50 years gave me a surprise wedding gift: the .44 Navy I had been coveting. In the bad times that was our only handgun, but we weren't unarmed. My wife is a jewel.
