Years ago, when I was flying in helicopters in the NC National Guard, we had an aviation safety meeting during which one of our flight surgeons spoke about this very thing. A patient of his, he was a cardiologist in his civilian role, needed desperately to lose weight, but her other doctors didn't want to hurt her kidneys with a high protein diet. Our FS said her kidneys could likely handle that, which was better than dying of being obese.
An informed opinion from Dr. Miguel Faria would be most welcome.
