When my wife and I were still living in Fremont, CA an indoor range suffered a similar event. What the ranges in the SF Bay Area did in response was to cease renting firearms to solo shooters that didn’t bring a firearm with them. To my knowledge there weren’t any more suicides by rented firearm after that.
As I expected, it was a rental. It's been known to happen that a person who can't obtain a gun (personal disability, totalitarian polity, insufficient funds) to commit suicide, rents one at a rental range and does the deed. Assuming reporters follow up, I wouldn't be surprised for us all to learn that this shooting fits this pattern.
