    I've been to the PRC on business a dozen times, and have heard this syllable interjected into conversation hundreds more. As many of the commenters to the original story point out, "nega" is placeholder syllable in Mandarin, and is used in much the same way that an English speaker would say "um" while gathering their thoughts.

    Academia has well and truly lost its mind.
