Perhaps those "bystanders" recall the Bernie Goetz in NYC circa 1984 ? He was corralled on a NY subway by four upstanding citizens (I won't mention their names, sex or race) mugging him and demanding money. Mr. Goetz, in turn, gave the four some lead. Not silver.
Rather than being proclaimed a hero Mr. Goetz was indicted on four counts of attempted murder.
4:1 odds against Mr. Goetz at the hands of criminal thugs. He beat them. But not the American justice system. They made certain the good guy was demonized while the four banditos were made out by media and .gov, to be the victims. Not the assailants.
