I'd Expect Nothing Less

Would it surprise you to learn that names have been added to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) that don’t belong there? [More]

No, no orders they would follow to curtail the freedom of their countrymen would surprise me.

I thought I'd already blogged on this, but I'll be damned if I can find it now...

  1. “The Federal Bureau of Investigation tracks gun sales and publishes a list of how many are handled as part of its National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Each month, the figures are reported by state. Nearly everyone put through this system qualifies as a buyer. People who are excluded usually have criminal records. Of the more than 310 million checks that have been done since 1998, there have only been 1.5 million denials. Therefore, the data is the best proxy for U.S. gun sales available.”

1.5 million denials per 310 million checks is a less than 0.5% rejection rate, or 1 in 200.

This is not “the best proxy for U.S. gun sales”, as it only reflects sales which involved a NICS background check. Black market sales to those who know or suspect that they will be denied by a FFL dealer because of a NICS background check are not enumerated.
