It's sort of a Virginia tradition. I lived in a neighborhood where one of the historic houses still had a "no Negro will ever set foot" clause in its deed restrictions. When the County told him it would have to come out in the next transfer of ownership, the owner demolished the house instead. This is pretty much the same mindset.
