The day after Kabul fell to Taliban control, the "Miami Herald" front page and most of the following "A-pages" were chock full of stories and pictures of refugees crammed into a C-17, running alongside of one taxiing, and scruffy looking Taliban patrolling the streets.
The following day it was as if none of that had happened, except for one article about the Afghan President bailing out of his country without notice. There was no mention that the US forces at Bagram Airbase had done exactly the same thing on July 6.

Another article explained that while Biden had pulled our troops out, Trump had planned to do the same, without any comparison of how the the two plans might have differed, or any awareness that they were saying their guy was no worse than Donald Trump, the Nazi AntiChrist.
And in so doing, one of the worst foreign policy defeats ever sustained by the United States became secondary to the earthquake in Haiti and some story about state government corruption.
On another matter, the mayor of Miami Beach had been quoted as saying "This is not who we are." Perhaps its not who we were. And it certainly is not who we should be.
But make no mistake about it, it is what some Americans have become.
