The slave states wanted the slaves counted as if they were free people.

And THAT is where the 3/5 compromise came from.
The refusal to count slaves as if they were free came from the North.
As has been often said, a man is entitled to his own opinion. He is not entitled to his own facts.
Then voting should also be banned... it is rooted in not allowing blacks or women to vote. Ban voting! Oh, wait... thats what they want.
