"We want to spread the word to women, that they can purchase non-lethal, self defense products without having to walk into a gun shop. We also want to point out that we chose non-lethal products, because sometimes weapons are turned against the victims that carry them. It is better to be sprayed with pepper spray, stunned with a stun gun or tasered with a Taser, than to be killed by your own gun. WomenOnGuard.com stands for less crime in this country, not more crime."Whatever.
Sounds like rapists will be spreading more than words thanks in part to the culture of ignorance you violence profiteers are hawking.
Funny--I didn't see either of you list self defense expertise credentials, yet you present yourselves as qualified to dispense advice that could result in serious injury or death if women follow it and it doesn't work. According to your blog profile, one of you is a graphic designer refugee from Cuban communism (hey, how'd that pepper spray work on Fidel?) and the other is an ex-banker.
So: What makes you "authorities"?
If you like,I could arrange a demonstration with a properly armed and trained female, and you can show everybody how you'd go about taking her gun away and using it against her.
UPDATE:
Your comment has been saved and will be visible after blog owner approval.
Let me be happily surprised. And yeah, I see the typo. Let's focus on substance.
Sounds like they are just setting women up to be sprayed first, and THEN raped and killed. Whose side are they on? We all know the answer to that one, don't we.
ReplyDeleteKent,
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's that. I think that they have a mindset that says that violence is bad regardless of the reason. Thus, violence used in defense is just as bad as violence used aggresively. Therefore guns, knives, etc... are bad, whereas so called "defensive" weapons, tasers, pepper spray etc..., are good. They then search out self defense instructors and cops who agree with them and viola.
Personally, I think that tasers have their place. There are a lot of people who just will not pull a trigger when they need to. For those people the taser is a great option. Heck I wouldn't mind having one as another option for home defense if they didn't require registration and they didn't spew that confetti for me to clean up if I have to deploy it.
Regardless of their "intent", it is the results that count. If a gun can be taken from you, so can pepper spray. If you are sprayed you will be less able to resist your attacker. The end results will be the same, with a new "first step": being sprayed. Their advice has helped the attacker carry out his plan.
ReplyDeleteI'm also not sure why spraying a painful chemical in someone's eyes doesn't count as violence. If someone does this to me, I will count it as violence and respond appropriately if I can.
ReplyDeleteOh boy! I volunteer to be the lady for the demonstration!
ReplyDeleteMy students use squirt guns to practice retention and other tactical exercises. They gain practical experience and confidence without endangering anyone.
Most of them start out believing this dangerous myth, and leave knowing better.
mamaliberty, I believe you are trying to seduce me. If you aren't, then this must be an example of those Unintended Consequences I keep hearing about.
ReplyDeleteI am a happily married man, so just quit being so damned attractive.
Seriously, keep up the good work. Not only will the women you teach be grateful, so will the men who love them.
Issues of lethal protection aside, I think the argument is flawed.
ReplyDeleteHow many rapists want to rape a bloody corpse? I would venture to guess that necrophilia is less common than rape.
So ... wouldn't it actually be safer to carry a gun? Not only do most people back down when staring down a barrel, but you're not very likely to get it used against you.
Hmmm something to think about. Might make for an interesting study, I wonder what data is available.
Forget the squirt guns, we use Airsoft for affordable force-on-force. Stupid should hurt.
ReplyDeleteI'd offer to let one of them just try to take my 1911 away.
Being wet hurts. I hate getting wet more than getting stung by a pellet. But that's just me.
ReplyDeleteSo..... Don't fight back with any effective means?
ReplyDeleteSounds like the advice from old Texan Clayton Williams when he likened Bad Weather to Rape...
"If it is inevitable, just relax and enjoy it".
Your Personal Space is roughly a cylinder whose diameter is described by the tips of your outstretched fingers. No one should come into that space uninvited. No one should appear ABOUT TO come into that space uninvited.
ReplyDeleteIf they have a knife, now your personal space widens to 20 feet.
It's possible for the knifeman to cross that distance and cut you in about 1.5 seconds.
You MUST be prepared to pull the trigger. Some people "ain't 'fraid o' your gun, man." They're the ones you WILL have to shoot if they persist.
We also know it's possible to draw against a drawn gun and win. Be prepared for that, too, whichever end of it you're on. If SOMEONE has a gun out, things can get terminal very fast.
My mindset about aggression is, they shouldn'ta started. I don't. I expect to be left alone. No doubt they assess ME as someone who won't be able to pull the trigger.
Wrong.
Pepper spray just makes 'em angrier. Taser darts have trouble with thick clothes.
No one wants to get shot. They may THINK they don't care, but the first one usually causes some doubt.
I thought you used tasers to shock them after you shot them. just to make sure they didn't play possum. no sense in wasting another round.. ammo's expensive these days.
ReplyDeleteI submitted this comment on their "Why Use Non-Lethal, Self Defense Products?" post:
ReplyDelete"If you think an assailant will just take a firearm away and use it against a woman, what's to stop him from taking her OC spray or Taser?
"This attitude is patronizing and disrespectful to women everywhere. You don't just buy a gun. You train, practice, train in weapon retention, and in force-on-force exercises.
"I've been sprayed with LE-issue OC in training and fought through it. The Taser is a single-use weapon, and if the barbs miss or don't spread far enough it will not be effective. Also, the official designation for OC spray and the Taser is LESS lethal, not NON-lethal. Through 1995, the ACLU has documented fourteen deaths involving OC. Amnesty International claims 337 deaths involving Tasers have occurred since 2001.
"Sorry, but as a rape survivor I'll stick with my .45 semi-automatic pistol."
I think they'll publish it about the same time they publish yours.

No comments posted, and no reply to David's very courteous invitation to join the conversation. Obviously they are not interested in the subject of self-defense or the dynamics of human interpersonal violence.
They're just interested in the money.
I've been making the point with my family and co-workers for years now: You're ALWAYS on your own. Allowing anyone but you to make life-and-death decisions for you is like asking a thief to hold your checkbook for you.
Man goes to a psychiatrist,Doctor I need help bad.
ReplyDeleteDr. says' well whats wrong'.
Man says 'well, everytime I make love to a woman I cry something terrible'.
Dr. says' lets see if I can help, what happens when you first start fooling fooling around'.
NMan says 'well after they get thru spraying my eyes with pepper spray I start to cry but then everything goes ok from there on. After I knock them around some'. Sorry for the poor taste and making light of a serious situation, but is about what would happen in their scenerio. I know I'll get creamed over this but let 'em rip.
They have fists, feet, a club, a knife, a gun.
ReplyDeleteSHE has ... spicy seasoning in a can.
A ridiculous notion.
By the way, a city park rapist here did his time, was released, and was back in the same park attacking another woman within the week. They don't "get better." More likely, they blame that b---- for getting them locked up, and get worse.
I think some passing bicyclists ran him down. Very lucky. In this park you can walk for 20 minutes and never see another soul.
You have GOT to see this!
ReplyDeleteWhile researching my suspicions that NO blog entries on their site have ANY comments, moderated or not (proven to be correct), I came across this:
http://womenonguard.com/safety_tips.htm#9
Apparently one of their "Safety Tips" to protect yourself from carjacking and kidnapping is to weigh 470 lbs.
The downside is the fact that when the aliens invade, they're going to eat the fat ones first.
Well I suppose we can look at it this way, when they are in so much pain from the pepper spray in the face or the electricity running through their body they may not even feel to pain of being sexually brutalized....or did I miss the point of why these women were giving this away instead of offering real protection?
ReplyDeleteNo, no thank you, I would prefer the women in my life use a rape whistle...a big .45 caliber rape whistle.
