"We're disappointed and frankly not happy, and we expect to get some assurances that this won't happen again," Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said. What, your stupid, expensive after-the-fact alert system failing, or prohibiting an immediate active response?
And who says utter failure doesn't pay?
Charles W. Steger, president of Virginia Tech, was paid nearly $720,000 during the same period...I wonder if Larry got to lick the plate?
"You'd think they'd have a backup for this kind of thing," Hincker said. That is supposed to be the backup, you dolt.
I am honestly starting to think that he is this dense.
Regardless, one small satisfaction--for some time now, and hopefully for a good long time, I'll always be right there looking over his shoulder...

I like this part:
ReplyDelete. . . and we expect to get some assurances that this won't happen again," Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said.
Not "we expect the issue to be resolved, so it won't happen again," but "we expect to get some assurances . . . "
Mr. Hincker seems to have a bit of a tendency to value happy illusions of safety--it was he, after all, who after a bill died that would have ended the "gun-free zone" status of Virginia campuses, said:
I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.
Just tell him what he wants to hear, apparently.
Too many people worship at the altar of technology. Obviously, they are worshiping a false idol.
ReplyDeleteRegrettably, the newspaper fails to relate the fact that it is the taxpayers who are being hosed.
The best solution - armed self-defense - is also the most cost effective.
Not that many are willing to make a fiscal argument.
Nobody's ever explained how a text message telling me about the nutjob who shot up my classroom several minutes ago is going to help me. Perhaps I'm too dense to be a college student...
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, this moron could be used as a good illustration of what not to be like when you grow up. College students need bad examples to know what to avoid. Let's keep pointing and laughing.

ReplyDeleteThe gunfire noises turned out to be the sound of an exploding nail-gun cartridge outside Pritchard. Campus police believe two unknown men caused the explosion possibly by slamming the lid of a trash bin on the cartridge.

For some strange reason I don't think 30,000 people, give or take, will be permanently thrilled to have half a dozen useless text messages and phone calls each and every time some fool drops a trashcan lid.
Even IF this was a good idea for the real thing, just how long do they think it will take before everyone ignores it altogether?
Reminds me of the infamous 'boom' at a CTASC meeting. that's our IN group through homeland 'security' maiking Indiana 'safe'.
ReplyDeleteI was watching the shenanigans when there was a liud boom outside the room.
Tom Wyss, State Senator and who votes for evey law to obstruct freedom, jumped like he was shot/ pooped his pants look on face.
My son and I laughed. We know explosions and this was not.
Turns out the bulldog State Police chief found out a mail can fell over.
Will and I just smiled.
Perhaps I'm too dense to be a college student...
ReplyDeleteJoe, your comment just brought to mind a line by Sonny (James Caan) in The Godfather II to Michael (Al Pacino):
"Did you go to college to get stupid?"
:-)
