FDA Says "No" to Palm Pistol.

Yesterday the inventor of the Palm Pistol, intended primarily to allow arthritic old people to settle beefs, claimed it had been approved as a medical gadget by the FDA. On the matter, the FDA had this to say: "NO."
"Settle beefs."

Nice.

As are most of the comments from their technowimp readers, who would no doubt glowingly approve of this device--assuming they're not already wearing them.

UPDATE: Be sure and read Ned's comment. Well said. I love it when people take these posts and do something with them.

  1. I left this post at Gizmodo - don't know if it will be published:

The merits of the palm pistol notwithstanding, I have to say I'm appalled at the judgments and classification of all elderly people as incompetent by some posters. Just substitute the word "elderly" for Gay, Black, Hispanic, etc, and see how it reads.

Really, some of you folks should actually put your brains in gear before typing. Perhaps the government should register all computer keyboards to limit this sort of hate-speech.

The essay itself is seriously wanting for logic. Intended primarily to allow arthritic old people to settle beefs? Gimme a break. I guess "arthritic old people" should just defend themselves with fists and feet. Or crash into a mugger with their wheelchairs.

With any luck, some of your judgmental posters will find yourself as infirm elderly people someday. Maybe some mugger will beat the snot out of you and you'll wish for a tool like the Palm Pistol.

Elderly people are often quite fragile. One punch from an adult male could maim or kill them. But they should just be put away somewhere where they won't bother you. Right?

Some introspection is in order here. A fear of weapons is a sign of a phobia. BTW - when the majority of states began issuing concealed weapons permits, some hoplophobes cried that people would be shooting others over parking spaces and "to settle beefs." It never happened. So go lock yourselves in your rubber rooms, and keep typing your judgmental tripe. This was my first visit to this website, and it will be my last. I'm more interested in logical discourse, not hysterical hate-speech.

  2. Ned, I agree wholeheartedly.

    My comment to gizmodo's blog:

If it weren't for the old folks most of you seem so willing to discount and abandon to die in nursing homes and/or other Logan's Run euthanasia paradises you wouldn't be here to spout your garbage.

It appears the writer of this article as well as a goodly number of commentors have little or no concern for the right of "old farts" to defend themselves against illegal assaultive behaviour. What's more, just herd them into the ovens - final solution.

"once approved" - I wonder if that is going to fall somewhere alongside "reasonable"?

  3. The comments at the article--and sentiments expressed therein--are very troubling. Such disrespect and contempt for the lives of our elders!

Corrie Ten Boom wrote in The Hiding Place about the fact that the Nazi regime cultivated contempt for the elderly. Miss Ten Boom's father employed a very elderly watchmaker. A younger employee from Germany was verbally abusive to the elder and was later found beating the heck out of him.

Perhaps people like the author of the article support dealing with the Baby Boomer crashing of Medicare through making elders more susceptible to death by criminal. After all, the government is moving, via futile care theory, towards both passive and active euthanasia as a means to deal with us.

  4. I overlooked the following comments section statement during my first venture into the world of the Gizmodos.

"We're looking for comments that are interesting, substantial or highly amusing. If your comments are [a] excessively self-promotional, [b] obnoxious, or even worse, [c] boring, you will be banned from commenting." (my [brackets])

My guess is; those of us who have any concerns outside the world of inane comments as to nerd gadgetry need not comment as we will probably fall into the [d] "all of the above" category. Well, with any luck at all, we managed to inconvenience one of the idiots for a few nano-seconds.
