A "joint...checkpoint"?
Well, that ain't what I was directly told yesterday. I was told the Marines were observers, learning how to do the drill so they could apply it on base.
I don't dismiss the possibility that this could be clumsy wording on the part of CHP, but think this is now worth getting some official answers for -- in writing.
Naturally, the "Authorized Journalists" are completely out of the loop on this. What more proof do we need that bloggers are illegitimate?
For starters, were I a California constituent, particularly one from that region, I'd be sending inquiries to my state assemblyman and state senator, and to my congressional representative and senator. I'd also chide the local papers and ask why they aren't getting to the bottom of this.

David,
ReplyDeleteStrangely, the Marines and Navy are not covered by Posse Comitatus.
"Applies only to the Army, and by extension the Air Force, which was formed out of the Army in 1947.
Does not apply to the Navy and Marine Corps. However, the Department of Defense has consistently held that the Navy and Marine Corps should behave as if the act applied to them."
See: http://www.homelandsecurity.org/journal/Articles/brinkerhoffpossecomitatus.htm
Y'know, I'd have to read the act itself to come up with founding intent--but then again, we know what the founding intent that came before that was, don't we?
ReplyDeleteGet out the spyglass and look back over your shoulder... is that a line in the sand waaaay back there?
ReplyDeleteYou know, it's goofy to be upset JUST about the presence of Marines.
ReplyDeleteI mean, this is an honest-to-god "Papers, please" checkpoint right in the middle of American territory. That alone should be pissing people off.
Add in the fact that it's going to be policed by the military and it should be SETTING people off. But will it?
If some punk nastily shoved an M4 in my face for no reason, that would be it for both of us.
ReplyDeletecheckpoints fall into that "reasonable regulation"
