The Five Ps

Individual ownership of a firearm no more qualifies the owner to protect themselves and their property and defend the rights granted by their creator than individual ownership of a cowboy hat qualifies the owner for the National Finals Rodeo. [More]
Very true.

Y'know, I bet it wouldn't be much of a stretch to come up with a similar statement about uniforms...

  1. Some good advice in his article but it does have a feel of "I support the Second Amendment...BUT"

  2. The only way this article could be misconstrued to be anything other than a pro-firearms article is if someone didn't read beyond the first paragraph.

The article points out the obvious: mere ownership of a firearm does not imbue its owner with the ability to use the firearm in a life-or-death scenario. In no sense does the article suggest that one should be prohibited from buying a firearm if they have not received training, but encourages those who may have a firearm but no training to GET themselves trained - wonderful advice!

Additionally, the article blasts many of the "common sense" idiocies, such as keeping all ammunition locked away from firearms.

Own a gun? Fantastic. Get training, too? Perfect.

  3. Whether or not one is "qualified" to protect themselves IN NO WAY limits the rights of anyone to protect themselves.

What a about an 80 year old lady in a wheelchair? Does she have to get some certain training, or any particular training, in order to qualify to exercise the right?

    I think not.

The article doesn't address that aspect of the issue. It is well meaning, but articles like this can also be used by our enemies to foster the idea that certain "reasonable" training requirements must be met before the right is exercisable.

Always think about how the enemy can use our own good words.

  4. Actually, I see plenty of rodeo riders who don't wear a cowboy hat (the sensible ones wearing a hockey helment). I don't see any cops out there without a gun.

    Analogy - fail.
