King's land, king's deer, king's men. I'm sure it made perfect sense to them, just as TSA inspectors who liberate valuables from luggage consider it a well-deserved job perk. It's stress-inducing, keeping the country safe from criminals and terrorists, you know.
Many years ago I worked in a rural California county. A local deputy sheriff advised me that if I planned on doing any deer hunting that I should get my deer before the season started like the locals did (he also told me in detail how to jacklight deer, which is, I think illegal to do in California) because it was too dangerous in the woods once the hunters started coming up from the flatlands.
