That was a somewhat interesting discussion on Survival Blog, after you weed out the personal arguments.
As Boston T. Party said years ago, a pistol is a weapon you use to fight your way to your rifle. So, that's out as a "go to weapon" for a Bug Out Bag (BOB).
While a .22 rimfire is a cost effective "meat getter", it's too light for any game larger than a rabbit or squirrel.
For years I resisted acquiring an AR-15 because the 5.56 caliber is too light for a resistance force weapon.
That was then, this is now.
There are two commercial cartridges available now for the AR-15 form factor, that is, the same size as the rifle chambered for the 5.56/.223 cartridge. Those are the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8SPC rounds.
Both the 6.5G and the 6.8S have about three times the power of the 5.56/.223 round with about two times the recoil force. The magazines for both hold 25 rounds in the same space occupied by 30 rounds of 5.56, a neglible difference considering the power difference.
All of this power in a 7.5 pound rifle is pretty nice. It's even possible to build a rifle as light as 6 pounds if one is diligent and stays with iron sights only.
I don't think, at this point in time, that one can or should consider any rifle other than an AR-15 in one of these modern calibers. If you do, you're leaving too much on the table.
Link no good, boss. Went to your left sidebar link list and hit The Survivalist. Good to go.
ReplyDeletelink works for me.
ReplyDeleteGood discussion but I don't think it's a good idea to list the guns one owns or has access to in an open forum.
One might have his bug-out bag emptied before he has an opportunity to use it.

WWW are you sure you were a cop? You sure have a liberty tilted outlook to have been. Oh, that's a good thing.
