Something tangentially related that I did back when I had the time was wrote to candidates who were pretty much silent on 2A, and set the tone of my inquiry so that a reader would assume I supported "common sense gun laws" while being careful to avoid the rabid rhetoric that would spook them from responding.

I "outed" a local politico that way. If I get some time to go through my hardcopy archives, I'll see if I can find that.
