When the Going Gets Tough...

Gun maker offers $33M to settle suit by Sandy Hook families [More]

The gun maker or insurers?

Additional notes on reflection: Prepare for the feeding frenzy that happens when sharks smell blood in the water. They may be trying to save themselves but they're serving up everyone else. Admitting that I haven't versed myself in this particular case, is it wrong of me to hope that, sensing weakness, the plaintiffs turn the offer down and demand more? I'm wondering if greedy lawyers making it too expensive to surrender may be the best option here.

Houses of Ill Repute?

In a series of tweets on June 8, Virginia Heffernan, a Harvard-educated columnist for The Los Angeles Times, wrote: “Real-estate listings should include prevalence of gun-ownership in a 50-mile radius and number of annual mass shootings in the region. Time to change what a ‘bad neighborhood’ is.” In follow-up tweets she added, “…and introduce a meaningful tax on guns and gun violence. No one should say ‘this is a great place to raise kids’ about neighborhoods where even one person has an assault rifle.” The idea is to take “race, class [and] politics out of the real estate equation.” [More]

If we're talking L.A., I'd think Neighborhood Scout would provide a more relevant metric. There's no mention of how many houses Hefferman has sold to validate her real estate creds, but who wants to bet race and class aren't factors in where she's chosen to live?

On a side note, this is the first time I believe I've ever seen NRA link to one of my articles -- :

If a recent request regarding Hunter Biden is a reliable indication, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) claims it is prohibited from releasing its records pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act where “the subject of the records request is a third party and a private citizen,” unless the person has authorized the release or the “public interest in the disclosure outweighs the personal privacy interests” of the individual.

I hope whoever did that doesn't get in trouble...😟

A Plan Comes Together

Geltzer was more explicit on the administration’s link between gun control and quashing domestic terrorism during his interview with NatSec Daily. Asked if gun reforms were imperative to stopping domestic terrorism, Geltzer replied: “I think tackling things that feed into the domestic terrorism challenge is an imperative, and there are a lot of things that feed into it. Easy access to certain types of firearms feeds into it. But so does, for example, polarization fueled by disinformation. That can make recruitment to domestic terrorism causes easier and more likely.” [More]

Gee, I wonder where he's going with this...?

Any of you biggest threats care to guess...?

“You may wonder why you were enrolled in this program,” the letter continues. “You were selected as a result of an evaluation of your recent criminal behavior using an unbiased, evidence-based risk assessment designed to identify prolific offenders in our community. I wonder what "an unbiased, evidence-based risk assessment" would say about the likelihood of WarOnGuns regulars to comply with citizen disarmament edicts...?

Until something is done about what their successors will be empowered to enforce, it will just be a matter of trading in the devil we know.

Been sayin' Trump's just an avatar.

We have lingered too long in this strange twilight zone where ego trumps justice, propaganda perverts truth, and imperial presidents—empowered to indulge their authoritarian tendencies by legalistic courts, corrupt legislatures and a disinterested, distracted populace—rule by fiat rather than by the rule of law. True enough. What I'm not seeing in this is a solution that hasn't been tried and either ignored or rejected by the requisite critical mass.

Life Imitates Art

Movie theater shooting: TikTok star on life support, woman killed during showing of 'The Forever Purge' [More]

It's not like California's "May (not) Issue" edicts and the parent corporation's "No Weapons" policy would have allowed them to do anything about that.

I don't get the fascination with the Purge movies, although they do give insights into what insulated Hollywood writers reveal about their own bloodthirsty psyches.

But what I really don't get is the whole concept of  "TikTok stars," although I imagine an American preoccupation with such trivial distractions is reassuring to enemies foreign and domestic.

I'm looking at a menu listing for a Pico de Gallo Burger Whatameal® for $8.89 and I'm thinking for that amount you could buy two pounds of chicken and some rice and feed a family. I recall having a conversation years ago with a friend at work, a black guy, incidentally, who went with me for M1 Garand qualification with the DCM (this was pre-CMP), and he had a similar observation about how people on public assistance would go into 7-Eleven and spend the price of a family meal on chips and soda.

"People don't know how to be poor anymore," he told me, relating how things had changed since he was growing up.
