Katrina Gun Settlement Reached

City officials have agreed to return hundreds of firearms that police officers confiscated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, part of a deal to resolve a lawsuit filed by gun lobbying groups.

The settlement agreement filed Tuesday in federal court calls for the National Rifle Association and Second Amendment Foundation to drop their case if the city follows a plan for returning guns to owners who had them seized by police after the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.
Good on them. Kudos and congratulations. At the risk of sounding less than properly appreciative, here's hoping I lose a bet with myself about the press releases each group puts out...

UPDATE: Hallelujah!
The Second Amendment Foundation assisted NRA in the legal battle against Mayor Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans.
That was the right thing to do. Now didn't it feel good?

  1. And for sure me lads, all coming to the cop shop to retrieve their property will have a go with NICS, right?

I'll wager a Guinness that many never see their tools again, as somewhere along the way they joined the ranks of 'prohibited persons'.

But it will take a lawsuit to get the final tallies.

  2. Interesting juxtapositioning, this article and the Norfolk, Va., gun owner harassment just below it.
Three years and two months to get back your haphazardly-stored, unmaintained guns. Welcome to Nyawlins, y'all! Come fuh tha party, stay for tha fascism.

  3. Could be worse. They could have held the gun OWNERS that long. Illegally, of course, but so is what they did do. And every police department official involved now has a better job and salary.

  4. People will finally get their lumps of rust back? How gracious.

  5. not enough, there should be jail time for the "city officials".

I bet I know what your bet is David. And I suspect you will win it. SAF? Whoever heard of them? We did this all by ourselves.

  7. Just finished reading "The Great New Orleans Gun Grab". Too bad all that's left is rusted and broken remnants that have been stored for years in the back of a Ryder truck.

  8. That's good news, I suppose.

Personally, I wouldn't be satisfied until quite a few heads were rolling around hither and thither.

The city actually won this one.

When seconds count, the police are only three years away.

  9. Correct me if I am mistaken, but wasn't there already a court decision on this that required the NO cops to return these illegally seized guns?

  10. I believe there was, Nimrod. But there were no penalties provided for not doing so. The lawsuit by SAF raised the specter of having to pay for non-compliance.

Just like the cops fled N.O. before, during and after the hurricane, Nagin and other city officials are now fleeing their responsibilities also.
