The Scorpion King

David Codrea is an anti's dream come true. He makes all gun owners look stupid.  [More]
My pals at Calguns are at it again. You know, the place where self-defense against unprovoked lying attacks will get you banned.  Because--what does their moderator say?
We do not allow personal insults or attack posts.

OK then.

So What?

Gun ownership in the nation is at the lowest level ever recorded by the General Social Survey, according to an analysis issued Tuesday by the Violence Policy Center. [More]
Well, as long as it's coming from an unbiased, trustworthy source. Josh and Paul said it, I believe it, that settles it!

Even if true, which coming from this group of treasonous liars I have absolutely no reason to believe, so what?

All we really need is 3%.

Let George Do It

From GunLeaders.com, via email:
ATF has renewed their Rifle Registration scheme plans.
http://www.gunleaders.com/blog/2011/04/29/atf-again-seeking-comments-on-registering-certain-rifles/

In the previous period for comments mayors against illegal guns submitted roughly 10,000 comments in support. We barely generated 2000 ( Gunleaders.com FOIAd the responses, and while we didn't get a full counting, I am personally calling BS to the number of opposing comments listed in register -3752. I don't think we had that many ).

More importantly, we observed a very strange silence on the part of pro-gun groups.

That needs to change. Please do everything you can to get the word out to gun owners to oppose this scheme.
Only 2,000?

I don't understand what the hell the problem is.

But I find it increasingly difficult to give credence to the notion that gun owners who won't even lift a finger to send a simple correspondence--or throw a few bucks at someone they receive regular value from--or share a fricking link--ought to be taken seriously when they go on about making real "from my cold dead hands" sacrifices when TSHTF.

Better men than us pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor.  The Heirs of Liberty all too often make excuses for their inaction.

"Profiles in apathy."  It's a greater threat than anything the antis are throwing at us.

This Day in History: April 29

Purrysburg was the first headquarters of the Continental Army within South Carolina under Gen. Benjamin Lincoln. On April 29, British Gen. Augustine Prevost of Savannah, Georgia crossed the Savannah River to begin his march towards Charleston in hopes of capturing it. On this date, a brief skirmish occurred between Lincoln's Continentals and Prevost's Loyalists near Purrysburg. [More]

No Fool Like an Old Fool

Can't wait to get me one of those full-autos available without background checks!

A retired criminology professor has put out his own press release announcing his anti-gun blog.  While there's nothing noteworthy about that, his hawking a self-published book caught my eye.

Go to the Amazon link and then click on the "Look Inside" option.  If you read the first few pages, it's obvious he has a "gunman" shooting up a thinly-disguised NRA headquarters, replete with Wayne LaPierre clone "William LaPlante."

Naturally, the gunman sprays "automatic gunfire" from an AK-47, and naturally, the intrepid hero is an "Authorized Journalist" who asks LaPlante:
Now that you've seen first hand the terrible damage from assault rifles, aren't you willing to back legislation to ban them?"
In other words, this author is either ignorant or a liar.  And he published a book that's based on a demonstrably false premise.

Then there's this whole business about shooting up NRA HQ while innocents soil themselves--and the author justifies it using a hospital massacre to blame NRA, or what it ostensibly represents--you know, you and me.

Pretty warped fantasy, but pretty revealing about what makes this guy tick.

Say, do you think if I take his lead and write a similar fictitious piece about somebody violently raiding, say, Grady Campaign headquarters with a machete--to prove that if they'd had guns they could have repelled him--that it might get some folks upset? Not that I would.  That doesn't have near the dramatic potential of taking a steamroller to one of those anti-gun "Lie-Ins"...

Hey, he started it...

Say a Prayer for Mike and Family

UPDATE-4/28/9:20 am: Just spoke with Mike--he and family are OK, although power is out and there is no telling when it will be restored. He'll try to get to a library today to log on and post to his blog.

---

Looks like Tropical Storm Lanny is on its way to Sipsey Street.  I just got off the phone with Vanderboegh and they're getting ready to head down to the basement. He's telling me he heard they could get an EF5 with 200 mph winds, and the National Weather Service classifies the threat as "Severe-Dangerous Tornado Outbreak Ongoing." You can learn more here.

Here's the latest from The Weather Channel:

It's terrifying to go through these--I know--I've been in a building that was hit by one and had part of the roof torn off, and another one that missed a direct hit by less than a hundred feet.  Plus I've seen several others up close and personal. Probably about the worst feeling is being with your family and knowing that ultimately, the power to protect them is beyond you.  They're doing what they can and taking all prudent measures humanly possible.

If you're inclined to say a prayer, now might be a pretty good time. Not just for Mike, but for all good people in harm's way.

UPDATE (8:13 pm EST): Mike just called-- he says it passed them by, but area reports say the watch is in effect until 2:00 am.  As of right now, their power is out.

National news magazines ignore ‘Project Gunwalker’ story, embrace statist fluff

Perhaps limiting searches to those three terms is short-sighted, and a more refined search would yield exculpatory findings but it should be noted that all three national “news” magazines also fail to produce anything relevant for the search terms “Grassley” and “Issa.”

Why is that, do you think? [More]

ATF Seized Firearms

As published in the Wall Street Journal on April 14...

We've covered such seizures before here, and I post them when I find out about them to make public information actually...uh...public, as opposed to confined to a limited venue where most gun owners will probably never see it.

As I asked in an Examiner column some time back: Does ATF want seized property notices noticed?

I also included this supplement.

I've loaded a new batch of scans to Scribd--they were sent to me over the weekend by correspondent Dan W. There are four files--here are their links:
By saving the files to my own computer and viewing them there (not on Scribd) I'm able to use Adobe reader to rotate them to vertical and then enlarge. Sorry, it's the best solution my limited (!!!) tech abilities can come up with.  If you have a better way, make it so and we can all go visit your site.

It seems ATF really ought to post this type of info on their site.  If they do and I just don't know about it, please educate me, because if I don't have to do any extra work, I'm all for it.

Meanwhile, Across the Pond in Sarah Brady Paradise...

The Proof is in the Pudding

A politican makes a pledge.

How serious was he?

About as serious as he was when he swore that oath of office on his "personal Bible."

You know, this serious:
Gov. Bill Haslam and Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey are working against a bill to allow faculty and staff to carry guns on the campuses of Tennessee’s public universities.
The Stupid Party continues leading the way with politically-calculated betrayals.

Take Ramsey--please:
“I want to concentrate on what I think is meaningful and what will help Second Amendment, gun carry permit holders the most,” Ramsey said. “And I do think that guns on campus is a sideline that we don’t need to be getting to right now.”
That's the same Ron Ramsey endorsed by GOA. And rated A+ by NRA.

"Who else are gun owners gonna vote for?" the strategy goes.  They're counting on us being that desperate. Meaning we'll never have the political will to punish and give up a seat for the short term to teach a lesson for the long term.

Meaning without a credible "or else," there will never be sufficient incentive to keep these despicable  Three Card Monte hustlers honest.

Obama 2012!  These principle-devoid whores seem bound and determined to guarantee it.

Guerilla Jurors

Citizens in our (once) free republic founded under the English common law system, have both the power and the right to vote according to conscience when they sit on a jury and can vote not guilty even in the face of the law and in the face of the evidence. The defendant also has a right to expect that his jury will be fully informed of their rightful power to vote “not guilty” if they believe justice requires it, regardless of the evidence. Anything less is not a real jury trial. [More]

Offending Colin

"It offends me that people who have never faced a gunman in the confined space of a classroom would think that it makes sense to allow loaded guns on campus, and even through rights of way," Goddard said, after the guns on campus buildings portion of the bill was stripped. "Gov. Brewer apparently understood the dangers of allowing guns to be transported through school and college zones, and I applaud her for rejecting this legislation that needlessly put lives at risk. Given the tragedy of Tucson, it's heartening to see elected officials stand up to the gun lobby and wake up to what needs to be done to protect the public from gun violence." [More]

This Day in History: April 21

I have relinquished the idea of attempting a cooperation between the troops at Fort Pitt and the bodies moving from other quarters against the six nations. The difficulty of providing supplies in time – the want of satisfactory information of the routes and nature of the country up the Alleghany and between that and the Indian Settlemts – consequently the uncertainty of being able to cooperate to advantage, and the hazard which the smaller party might run for want of a cooperation are principal reasons for declining it: The danger to which the frontier would be exposed, by drawing off the troops from their present position, from the incursions of the more Western tribes is an additional, though a less powerful motive. A man convicted of transferring an unregistered machine gun after his loaned gun fired a burst of bullets and jammed has been released from his 30-month prison term to begin rebuilding his life, according to supporters. [More]
That would be David Olofson.

A bit of text pasted into the story from previous articles that I've commented on before:
"It didn't matter the rifle in question had not been intentionally modified for select fire, or that it did not have an M16 bolt carrier … that it did not show any signs of machining or drilling, or that that model had even been recalled a few years back," said a commentary in Guns Magazine on the case.

"It didn't matter the government had repeatedly failed to replicate automatic fire until they replaced the ammunition with a softer primer type. It didn't even matter that the prosecution admitted it was not important to prove the gun would do it again if the test were conducted today," the magazine said. "What mattered was the government's position that none of the above was relevant because '[T]here's no indication it makes any difference under the statute. If you pull the trigger once and it fires more than one round, no matter what the cause it's a machine gun.'

"No matter what the cause."

The guy who wrote those words has a name, you know, WND. And a little bit of credit (and a working link) from a high-traffic site that has used such extensive quotes on several occasions sure would be helpful, not to mention the right thing to do.

What if they gave an award and nobody came?

We talked about the upcoming award from Soldier of Fortune for our work on Gunwalker.

To no one's surprise, the powers that be at the NRA Annual Meeting will not allow the presentation to take place at the convention, so this scene in front of the supportive assemblage will remain a fantasy image (pity, I was really looking forward to the ceremonial Wookiee roar):

Alternate arrangements are being made to present the awards at a nearby hotel.  The time and place will be announced when firmed up.

In the mean time, there is a bit of a logistics issue.  Meaning many (most) who receive regular value from Sipsey Street Irregulars apparently assume its proprietor can continue to serve us all with no recompense, and if he wishes to eat and provide for himself and his family, well, he can do that in his spare time and out of our sight.  And that means funds just aren't there to haul Vanderboegh's carcass up from Pinson, AL to accept an award he has earned.

So I repeat my call--not for charity or for donations, but to voluntarily subscribe to Sipsey Street Irregulars. As I said in that post:
My envelope with my $12 annual subscription fee is in the mail.
Mike Vanderboegh
P.O. Box 926
Pinson, AL 35126.
If you agree with me, yours will be too, and you'll spread the word.

Remember, I never ask readers to do anything I don't do myself.  In order to keep expenses down, I'll put him up at my palatial digs in the guest room, plus I'm one hell of a cook, so meals are taken care of, and Pittsburgh is only a hundred miles or so from where I live, so I can handle that leg of his trip.  Meaning we need to either get enough for him to rent a car for a few days and gas it up for a 1,400 mile round trip to my place, or else find out if he's on TSA's No Fly list, what with his being a domestic terrorist hatriot 'n all...

Let's just do this.

A Journalist's Guide to 'Project Gunwalker'-Part Three

The Examiner publishing tool maxes out with a character limit, requiring a third part to the guide for all posts from my Gun Rights Examiner column, Mike Vanderboegh's Sipsey Street Irregulars posts and related "Gunwalker" columns from the regional GREs.

Well, I'm Back

I'm catching up on the flood of emails, then need to educate myself on all the Gunwalker developments that happened in my absence, which appear to be significant.

I offer sincere thanks to those who offered prayers.  Things have stabilized for the moment, albeit the condition is heartbreaking. I'm probably not going to say any more about this just now as it involves personal health matters of someone I love who is not a public figure and who always respected the privacy of others.

An Open Letter to Kalifornia Gun Stores

This just in from a friend who has had it:

kalifornia gun stores are succeeding where the state NEVER could - They are making me sick and tired of buying guns. I have been collecting guns for 35 years. From the gunstore(s) I have watched the decline of the industry and freedom in general over that period of time.

I am writing you as a kalifornia boiled frog.

I am sick and tired of doing business with, paying out money to, providing income for sullen, superior, can't give a crap petite federal agents operating gun stores. Let's face it, the owner of your local gun store and his employees are federal agents light. Instead of paying homage to the constitution for the right to operate a gun business in a "free country" They (at least in practice) suck up to the BATFU, State DOJ's and police at every level bending over backwards to satisfy government agents over their paying customers for fear of suffering the consequences. Make no mistake, the counter person at your local gun store is a fed light.

It is so hard to do gun business in kalifornia that as a customer you are a captive and your gun store knows it and treats you that way - like you have no choice, take it or leave it

Two recent experiences at kalifornia gun stores illustrate where the gun business is at in the state. Last week I purchased a Colt Gold Cup from a private party and met him at Marin Firearms in Novato to do the required private party transaction. The store personnel were frowning sullen people that could not care less about having a customer. At the end of the transaction the sales person took the gun out of the case and refused to use my case to hold it in the safe (for the required 10 days) unless I bought a case from him - which I did - the only money I will ever spend in his store ever again - I hope he made out on the sale. They also have a policy of making you wait 11 days to pick up a firearm because as long as you have to bend over anyway, being good little apparatchiks, they want you to bend over a little farther.

Again, yesterday at Irvington Arms in Fremont - picking up another Gold Cup, the sales person would not accept my lock, made me buy one for $10, refused to take it back when I wanted to return it and another sales person who had more than a dozen times accepted my lock, turned his back on me when I asked him to intercede - And I have purchased two dozen guns in this store and at least a dozen from this sales person over the last two years. AND HE TURNS HIS BACK ON ME!!! I Hope they made out on the $10 lock because they will never see a dollar from me again. Ever.

I'm a serious collector, a serious buyer and I am pretty damn easy. I am in my peak earning and spending years and I spend but.....Why should I help provide an income to people who are surly and contemptuous and act like they could care less if I did business in their store(s) or not? I'm sick of kalifornia gun stores. You apparently don't need my money - I don't NEED to buy your products, I got plenty, I'll hold, F*** you! If I treated my customers in the common manner of kalifornia gun stores I would be out of business by Christmas. (and I would not deserve the business I did get)

The fact is that gun stores give all the time and dignity in the world to counter sitters who read gun magazines and own no guns. The biggest group of alleged customers I see in gun store are the crowd whose "wife won't let me have one". They are there to remember what testosterone smells like. You don't see the real, repeat buyers at the gun store any more because they are in and out, have their paperwork together and don't hang out in what has become a hostile environment. The REAL gun buyers, the ones that value and understand the second amendment, the constitution and understand freedom and BUY LOTS OF GUNS come closest to witnessing freedoms loss with every visit to a kalifornia the gun store.

From what I see as a 35 year BUYER in the industry, I can only figure that kalifornia gun stores are counting on new customers and ripping off uninformed people selling their used guns in a state with nowhere else to go. The only reason to have a gun store in kalifornia seems to be to mine the state for collectibles to sell out of state and to sell plastic guns to the (must be) endless stream of new gun consumers. Regular buyers who spend real money repeatedly - they can go to hell. No inventory, polymer guns only, rigid fed representatives (store employees) - WHO NEEDS EM? F' em. I know why the business is dying.

Recently my daughter moved to Arizona and it is night and day. She has 14 gun stores within seven miles of her house - all of them friendly - all of them acting like they want your business - all of them having inventory!!! She can purchase a firearm and be out the door with it in 15 minutes from people who are happy to see her and happy to have her business. They return her calls!!

And while we're on the subject - This could not happen if kalifornia gun owners weren't in the majority such peer pressured pussies. We are where we are because kalifornia gun owners put up with it and allow it to happen.

All you have to do is look on Cal Gun to see gun owners who act like they have never seen a free market "Price is firm - no low ball offers" - "Price reduced". "Price reduced", "Price reduced" - "only 10 rounds down the tube fired by little old lady wearing gloves" - and my personal favorite, "If you don't buy it at this price it's going back in the safe". Are we such pussies that we are insulted by an offer? As adults don't we understand that the value of an item is "what a ready, willing buyer is willing to pay"? Not being on the kalifornia "approved list" doesn't make your gun a valuable or rare collectors item - Come back to earth!!!

I have to say that after years of the slow boiling that is putting up with kalifornia at every level, I am overcooked and dry and I am going to withhold my further participation (i.e. $$$$$) from the industry. I hope all the gun stores in kalifornia close, the owners go bankrupt and their personnel become unemployed.

Yours in total disgust,
I think some gun store owners need to hear that. Amazing how being polite, interested and helpful seem to be some kind of great, impossible-to-master mystery for some, and how many people completely lacking in any kind of social skills are placed in customer service positions.

Brazil school shooting gives further proof ‘gun control’ does not work

We’re further told that it’s “virtually impossible to obtain a carry permit,” and that a tax must be paid every three years to own a gun legally. So naturally, nine of the estimated 17 million guns in Brazil are unregistered. [More]

Rapid-Fire Foolishness

Great "straight news" story there, Jon Campbell.  Nice to see personal bias getting in the way of honest reporting by someone who clearly has no understanding of what the f*** he's talking about.

You know, standard "Authorized Journalism."

So the new "heroism" is someone bleeding under a desk, unable to do anything but call for others to come risk their lives and deploy with guns?  Really?

Someone who thinks "Congress [will] protect us" in an active shooter situation?

Oh, that's right--if you ban standard capacity magazines (aka "assault clips"!!!) you won't have any more active shooters.

Well, maybe not quite. The congressthing's spokesflack quoted in the story says we also need "mental health care measures, to ensure such a horrific event never occurs again."

And if that doesn't work, we can release the Conflict Widows!
