The guest list combined Beatty's interest in movies and liberal politics, starting with the continual playing of the Communist Party anthem, "The International," which was featured in Beatty's Oscar-winning movie "Reds."

If there's anything more endearing to men like me than rich and famous Bolsheviks gathering at a banquet to bestow awards on each other, I don't know what it could be.

So why am I flashing back to an old Firesign Theater quote?

The most heartwarming tribute of the evening?

Among the many video tributes that were interspersed (rather skillfully, I might add) with the live speeches was one from Sen. John McCain. He and Beatty are actually quite good friends as it turns out, even though their politics — as each has pointed out — are very different.

Right, "very different."

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge.

Nice heroes on his wall, eh?

For all his worrying about the inhumanity of lethal injections, he's strangely silent on communist executions.

Naturally he's an establishment democrat.

And a rewarder of criminals (how does a felon qualify to be a bailiff?)

And it's not just white collar criminals coddled by Judge Burge: guys who beat their wives in the head with a hammer and hold them at gunpoint also qualify.

Let's see what else:

He gave probation to former Elyria councilman Joseph Monteleone, who was convicted of touching the buttocks of three teenage girls and twice asking a 15 year-old girl for sex...

Burge acquitted James P. Smith, a Lorain man who admitted to whipping his son on the back with a belt, of domestic violence and endangering children charges...

How does a creature like this come into power?

By a landslide.

I'd say this is a pretty good microcosm of what we can expect when you combine democracy with a feelings-based electorate and then give them a Lightworker to illuminate the way...

Let's Hear It for Rock Hill Officials!

When Rock Hill school officials tell commencement crowds to hold their applause until the end, they mean it — police arrested seven people after they
were accused of loud cheering during the ceremonies.

That's the old school spirit!

Kudos to Rock Hill for realistically preparing their inmates for the role they'll be expected to play when released into the general population.

Obedience to authority is important, whether you're part of the managed herd, or if you're an "Only One" entrusted with a prod and relied on to follow orders.

Georgia, Florida and Texas are the top suppliers of crime guns to other states, according to crime gun trace data recently released by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) and analyzed by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Just one problem--well, several, actually:

But ATF and gun proponents found flaws in the Brady Center's calculations.

ATF supervisor Todd Reichert in Washington noted that the agency's data included some gun sales that were originally made as much as 10 years ago, which is much longer than the two-year "time to crime" ATF considers an indicator of a possible illegal gun sale.

Reichert also said not all law enforcement agencies report recovered crime guns for tracing. And, he said, spikes in the numbers come after ATF helps police agencies clear backlogs as those departments begin reporting recovered crime guns to the federal agency.

That's pretty pathetic when even BATFU and The Atlanta Journal Constitution won't give you cover for your faulty analysis and calculated lies.

This Day in History: June 14

The militia that defeated the British regulars in Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, followed the British retreat towards Boston and encamped upon the Cambridge Common and barracked in the halls of Harvard University. Emboldened by this militia's success, the Continental Congress declared this militia on June 14, 1775 to be the Continental Army. Upon this declaration, General George Washington rode from Philadelphia to Cambridge to take command of the Army on July 3, 1775.
