That doesn't mean the risks we take need to be stupid. And if anybody's going to be doing any fearing, I'd prefer it be the ones trying to inflict it. So yeah, "free speech" and not having tyrants with the power to burn you at the stake without putting their own skin in the game is supremely important.
Maybe I'm misreading this guy, but I walked away from this thinking "stupid theologian." Sorry, I'm more of a "sell your cloak" and no "guilt of self-murder" kind'a sinner...
Tangentially related: During my recent hiatus away from the internet, I found the time to read Dante's The Inferno, a very thoughtful and erudite 1953 Mentor Books translation by John Ciardi with in-depth introductions for each canto and copious footnotes. Reading that may sound like hell to you, but I couldn't put it down, especially with all the "side trips" into mythology and details on characters like Hercules, the Minotaur, Jason, Ulysses... Just don't tell the cancel culturists what it says about the fate of sodomites and Mahomet or they'll have it burned quicker than you can say "Dr. Seuss."
