Katrina Gun Settlement Reached

City officials have agreed to return hundreds of firearms that police officers confiscated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, part of a deal to resolve a lawsuit filed by gun lobbying groups.

The settlement agreement filed Tuesday in federal court calls for the National Rifle Association and Second Amendment Foundation to drop their case if the city follows a plan for returning guns to owners who had them seized by police after the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.

Good on them. Kudos and congratulations. At the risk of sounding less than properly appreciative, here's hoping I lose a bet with myself about the press releases each group puts out...

The Second Amendment Foundation assisted NRA in the legal battle against Mayor Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans.

That was the right thing to do. Now didn't it feel good?

VA Open-Carry Activist Illegally Arrested Again

This is beyond believable but Dan Moore was arrested shortly after leaving Norfolk City Hall this evening. Once again, Norfolk Police illegally arrested Dan, handcuffed him, unlawfully disarmed him, and eventually issued him a citation.

A nearby citizen attempted to film the arrest but was ordered by the Norfolk Police to stop, or else!

I still think some sort of plan would be helpful...in all open carry states where this is a problem.

Home Defense Animation

As for the Home Defense poster animation, I intended to make it an interactive banner that I could share with other home defense advocacy websites. I would still like to do that, but I need some assistance.

First, I need your opinion about the content of the banner; tell me what you like and don’t like about it. Click on it and watch the show. Second, I would like for other websites to install the banner and give me feedback about how to improve the installation package.

My opinion? I think it's really cool.

As for content feedback, I might not tell people to visit their gun dealer--the person behind the counter may or may not be qualified to offer much more than an opinion--I've met my share I wasn't that impressed with. Since folks are viewing this from the Internet, I'm not sure how inclined they would be to take real world action anyway--possibly the thing to do would be to refer them to another website--since they're online anyway and the effort is minimal, to learn more. Which website would be best I cannot say. Perhaps others can.

But overall, I love it and would like to see more efforts like this. I'd ask WarOnGuns visitors to spread the word on this, and direct some traffic on over to check it out. And yeah, I'll install the banner.

Yo, BATFU, You May Have Missed One...

A gun buyback program in the city spearheaded by an Albany pastor has already maxed out with 10 guns taken in, the pastor said Tuesday...

Muller said he plans to turn over the guns to city police this week.

What?

Police weren't there overseeing and taking immediate possession?

Is Muller licensed like you or I would need to be?

Can this article be correct? Because as written, I see a whole bunch of federal and state felonies. Possibly loading up the Daily Gazette's comments form asking about this will prompt the reporter to clarify, and maybe even result in further action---not that they ever seem to take it against those doing their bidding...

UPDATE: I emailed the reporter and got this back:

Thanks for the note. I may not have gotten details on the exact workings, but the program is being run with the full knowledge of the police department. The public safety commissioner and police chief, along with the district attorney were there at the announcement last week with pastor Muller. I may address this more fully when we touch on this again.

Here's my reply:

I don't believe "knowledge" is enough--they need to have someone in authority there. Unless the pastor is an FFL...

He may very well have local and state waiver sanction, although I really don't see how they're empowered to ignore NY firearms transfer laws, but the other thing that strikes me is the federal laws that appear to have been broken--again, just based on what I'm reading in your account, as I have no idea what actually transpired.

If there are not additional details that somehow weren't offered to you, you may have a bigger story. It would be interesting to get a quote from ATF on this, don't you think? Nail down exactly what the authority is to conduct such private buybacks...?

We're the Only Ones Protesting Enough

The first day of civilian flaggers has brought out some protesting police officers.

They forgot to say law-breaking protesting police officers.

That thug who drove the wrong way and then tried to blame it on the "civilian" flagger should have been arrested on the spot. And tell me known cops swearing and calling you names is not intimidating--especially realizing they know how to find out who you are.

The flip side is, everybody gets to see the mentality of these goons. Those capable of putting two and two together will understand the same bullying on display here is just part of the every day attitude they treat all non-"Only Ones" with--and if they're this bold with cameras on them, just imagine what they're like "in private." And remember: these are the enforcers of citizen disarmament--they get guns but you don't.

A few bad apples my...eye. It's past time these criminal parasites were scoured from the Shire.

In a plea deal with authorities, the former bodyguard to Mayor Frank Melton confessed to what he did at the house on the night of Aug. 26, 2006, and will tell a jury what the mayor and fellow bodyguard Michael Recio did.

It does explain why Frank is a Mayor Against Guns, does it not? And an "Only One"?

More than 120 students have signed a petition protesting “gun promotion” at pep rallies, but the school principal, Nathan Chaddick, called the skit "simple, innocent satire" to boost school spirit, according to the Sentinel.

120 out of over 1,800 students? That's national news?

Get a counter-petition protesting panty-wringers and bury 'em. Problem solved.

We're the Only Ones Special Ops Enough

A Marine Reserve intelligence officer recently returned from Iraq is helping the department create a new unit that will replace the scandal-plagued Special Operations Section.

"Scandal-plagued" police in Chi-Town. How surprising. So naturally, the answer is to make them even more powerful, more able to crush your enemies, drive them before you and hear the lamentation of their women.

But don't worry about militarization of the police* or the reverse. If you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about. Besides, I was told we don't have to worry about the Marines.

One question though: Would we refer to "elite cops" as Only Ones²?

Boy, that didn't take long--I see the new SOS formation effort has already started, complete with qualifications and application instructions. Nice recruiting poster.

Creek reportedly taunted state police in an e-mail exchange Monday, threatening a county jailer and telling police he was going to "make them earn their money" in their search for him.

I wonder how this sterling example of "Only Oneism" used to taunt citizens in his power...I wonder how he earned his money...

Bond was denied Tuesday for a reported gang member charged with two counts of attempted murder for firing shots at police...

Well he certainly sounds mad dog dangerous.

But how'd they apprehend him if he had a gun?

Restoring the Second Amendment

Nordyke, it now appears, might help with the answer. Last week, four preeminent legal scholars... filed a friend of the court brief arguing that the 14th Amendment "and specifically its privileges or immunities clause were designed to forbid states from abridging fundamental rights of citizens, including those rights in the Bill of Rights." The Second Amendment, of course, is right there on that list.

Go get 'em.
