School ‘safety’ logo contest illustrates utter hypocrisy on gun imagery

But here’s the hypocrisy: Students are encouraged to depict guns if it is useful to an anti-gun agenda being promoted by the government. But if a student simply draws a gun, has a gun photo on a laptop, has a gun-shaped piece of paper, wears an “offensive” t-shirt or even points a finger, they’re likely to run afoul of the school’s “zero tolerance” policy and find themselves suspended. That makes actually having a toy gun extra-double bad. And if bubbles are involved, the “adults” in charge may just brand your five-year-old a “terrorist threat.” [More

‘Essential Liberty’ is a thriller with characters deserving of a deeper look

Overall it’s a good adventure story that actualizes some of the darker ambitions being put forth by those bent on citizen disarmament, and the coercive motives and methods Olive establishes, and the way “The List” could be used to prioritize targets for special “Collections” teams and cow others into compliance, give his narrative a feel of authenticity. What they never seem to establish is what understanding the respondents actually have of the issue, and who told them what they "know."

Via RufX2, who notes:
The NRA, if it truly means to stand its ground against the real remaining issue coming out of the no-crisis-left-unused moment of Newtown, ‘universal background checks,’ needs to be more vocal as to why they should not be imposed on the individual citizen, or if so, how that would work to not result in recordation. Both of these approaches would serve to forestall the avalanche of the Bill of Rights amnesiacs and media encouraging of a generalized policy; one that they know, once enacted, will allow the unelected wonks to write the rules.

Call For Emergency Patriot Support

From the Second Amendment Foundation:
URGENT: Obama has officially launched his attack against guns. It is imperative we collect as many resources as possible to brace for this fight that could last well into this year. We will need funds to fight this attack on the Second Amendment in Washington, DC and in every State House that proposes anti-gun legislation. WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!

SAF is facing severe financial cash shortage and will not be able to continue to respond to anti-gunners without your immediate help.

Let the Games Begin!

The new law would outlaw all semiautomatic weapons, criminalize anyone who has more than 500 rounds of ammo, and require a permit to buy ammunition in the future. California, which already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, is also looking at a proposal which would call for the immediate confiscation of 166,000 registered modern sporting rifles. [Read]

Yeah, well, good luck with that, seeing how just one guy can tie up and put those who would be attempting the confiscations into innocent bystander panic-shooting mode..

Revitalization of the State Militias

With his newest book, The Sword and Sovereignty, Edwin Vieira, Jr., has given us a magisterial work that meticulously documents the history of the early American Militias and why similar units must be revitalized today if we are to adequately confront our disintegration as a society and restore the republic that the Founders gave us. A Taxing Idea

One way to accomplish this goal is to establish a voluntary registration system for all privately owned firearms. Those who chose to register their guns would receive a card that would entitle them to purchase — tax free each year — as many bullets for each of their guns as any reasonable gun owner could use. Just show your card and a picture ID, and there would be no tax on bullets for your quota, which could easily be monitored by the same computer systems that verify the right to purchase a gun. No one would be required to register, but not doing so would make bullets much more expensive. Of course, criminals and others who are not permitted to own firearms would probably not apply for the discount, but if they did, knowing who owned a particular gun would help law enforcement track down those who illegally use them. And, for those who insisted on buying clips that held more than 10 rounds, the tax should be much higher. [More]

Update to Marine Parade Rifle Column

I’d like to address some of the common objections appearing in comments to Saturday's GRE column.

My attention to this story came from an email list run by and for Marines.

The rifles are NOT being carried in bolt open position.  The bolts have been removed. You can tell because the operating rods are in the forward position.

The rifles in the 2009 inaugural, as shown in the last slide show photo, did not have the bolts removed.

The issue of parade rifles carried by honor guards being disabled in a different fashion under previous administrations, such as having their firing pins removed, is not being argued here, although it should be—not that it didn't happen, but that it does.  But that’s not the thrust of this article. Here’s what is:

Unlike in 2009, in the 2013 inaugural parade, someone in authority made the decision to change that and order the Marines to march with visibly disabled guns.
