I just got off the phone with Mike.
He's got MRSA, a hospital-acquired infection. He's hooked up to a feeding tube. He says his "blood values are fairly good."
I asked him if he was able to read, thinking how mind-numbingly boring it must be, and he said yes, he's reading Katie Pavlich's book--she had a pre-publication copy sent to him.
He still sounds weak and may post something later today at Sipsey Street, but "probably not."

That's not good news, David. MRSA led to my mother's death of pneumonia. She was much older than Mike is, though, so maybe his immune system can handle it better than hers did. I'll pray that's the case. Tell him, though, that he needs to sit down with his family and talk things out, get his papers in order: will, living will, healthcare power of attorney.
I had that after a bypass operation. It ain't fun but after umpteen gallons of IV antibiotic and a lot of bed rest, I beat it. He will too but it'll be awhile before he's 100%.
Not all MRSA is hospital-acquired. Most of us are already colonized just from our daily living and will never know it, just from touching things other people have touched. Especially people who have worked or are working in healthcare. The danger comes when a person is already in a weakened condition, such as following surgery, and then develops the MRSA infection.
MRSA can be treated successfully by culturing the bacteria for specific sensitivity to specific antibiotics, usually vancomycin.
